James D. Hogan is the Vice President for Advancement at Mitchell Community College in Statesville, North Carolina. His work at Mitchell oversees fundraising and development, marketing and communications, and alumni and community relations for the college, which serves more than 10,000 students each year in Iredell County.
A nationally recognized education writer and advocate for public schools, Mr. Hogan spent his early career teaching high school English and creative writing. He worked as a major gifts officer for Davidson College, a perennial top-ten liberal arts college located in the Charlotte region, from 2008 until 2017.
As one of the founding members of Our Schools First, a non-partisan 501(c)(4) organization focused on promoting public education, Mr. Hogan was part of the successful effort in 2014 to pass more than $131 million in education bond funding for Iredell-Statesville and Mooresville Graded Schools as well as Mitchell Community College. He served as the organization’s spokesperson from 2015-16.
Mr. Hogan is a graduate of the Honors College at Western Carolina University, where he currently serves on the Board of Advisors, and is an alumnus of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program. In addition, he serves on the board of the Boys & Girls Club of the Piedmont, and he has previously worked on the boards of the Trinity Artist Series and served on the vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church.
His wife, Kelly Williams Hogan, is a veteran elementary music teacher and author of My Zero Carb Life. They live in Statesville, NC with their three children.
