Eine Kleine Biographie


James D. Hogan is the assistant vice chancellor for engagement at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. His work there oversees annual giving, alumni and family engagement, and advancement communications.

A nationally recognized education writer and advocate for public schools, Mr. Hogan spent his early career teaching high school English and creative writing. He worked as a major gifts officer for Davidson College, a perennial top-ten liberal arts college located in the Charlotte region, for nine years and served as vice president for advancement at Mitchell Community College from 2017-2021.

As one of the founding members of Our Schools First, a non-partisan 501(c)(4) organization focused on promoting public education, Mr. Hogan was part of two successful referenda campaigns, which approved nearly a quarter billion dollars in education bond funding for Iredell-Statesville and Mooresville Graded Schools as well as Mitchell Community College in 2014 and 2020.

Mr. Hogan earned his doctorate in community college leadership at North Carolina State University’s Belk Center. He is a graduate of the Brinson Honors College at Western Carolina University and an alumnus of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program. He earned his M.Ed. Educational Leadership at UNC-Charlotte.

In addition, he has volunteered and served several organizations as a board member, including the Boys & Girls Club of the Piedmont, Trinity Episcopal Church, the Iredell County Community Foundation, and the WCU Honors College.

His wife, Kelly Williams Hogan, spent 21 years as a music educator and now owns My Zero Carb Life. They live in Sylva, NC with their three children.
