Appalachian Houdini

Fog this morning was like a thick blanket–thicker than thick, a woolly bedspread, a knitted afghan in layers so deep, doubled and tripled, that even the creek bottoms had fallen into clouds. Grey mist suspended in the air protesting subjection to the laws of gravity.

A young buck emerges seemingly out of nowhere. He does not startle at first, but picks up his pace as I come closer, trotting across the road before pausing in the neighbor’s yard, his tail flicking up and down, his two chopstick horns angled heavenward. We are both a bit stunned: where did this strange observer, the man in the SUV wearing a baseball cap, come from so quietly? We both suspect the other of being able to teleport. Not far beyond, a rafter of wild turkeys pause, picking at the remains of a dead squirrel and dozens of black walnuts, all crushed by passing cars.

On the old highway, I see men putting a boat out on the river, stocked with provisions and coffee for a morning of fishing. They float in the fog upon the water, rapids and currents a trance of noise, their fly rods waving back and forth like sorcerers’ wands.

Not to mention

Before the mountains were born

Life continues to move pretty fast.

Yesterday I lit a fire under my own rear end and decided to put together the family video for the year (a tradition of sorts that started way back when I began making videos documenting each month of our kiddo’s first years), and if nothing else, I can say with confidence that the Hogan family has been on the move.

In the course of this past year: Atlanta, Miami, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Labadee (Haiti); Washington, D.C. with Thomas (the kiddo-trip-with-Dad experience); Cherry Grove (the annual Beach Week); out west–Denver, then Las Vegas, then Zion National Park, then Grand Canyon National Park, then Phoenix; then to Toronto for a Springsteen concert, then to New Jersey to visit family. Not to mention a bunch of trips around Cackalack.

It was the year a hurricane came and devastated so many towns and communities here in western NC, an occasion where I found myself sitting in for my boss while he was out of the country. (This, coincidentally, was roughly where my commitment to working out every week sort of fell apart. See more below.)
